What a main event and performance from Petr Yan. Time to rewatch it and break it down for all the cool things we saw.
Round 1: Figgy is able to get an early takedown with an inside trip but Yan stays active and keeps scrambling and throwing strikes to not let Figueiredo relax.
Figueiredo takes the back of Yan, but Yan is able to reverse into being on top and from there he throws some solid ground and pound.
The fight gets back to the feet for the last 15 seconds, and Yan continues to pressure and throws a good leg kick.
Close round with Figgy starting the stronger but Yan took over for the second half and did a lot more with his control so he takes the first round 10-9.
Round 2:Â Straight away, Yan switches stances and starts using sidekicks to the knee, which damages Figgy.
The leg kicks continue to come from Yan as the round continues and you can tell it’s part of his game plan as Figgy doesn’t deal with them well.
You can see Yan trying to set up an osoto gari throughout the round, but he just can’t find the angle for it yet.
In the last ten seconds of the round, Yan starts to land well and finally gets his osoto gari trip, but he doesn’t have enough time to do much with it.
Good round from Yan. Figgy looked tired and is not a fan of the leg kicks coming from Yan. You can tell Yan is going to continue to pick up the pace the longer the fight goes. 10-9 Yan
Round 3: Figueiredo is able to get a takedown, but Yan is straight back up and back to his leg kicks.
Yan times a perfectly sneaky uppercut that lands clean and knocks down Figgy, and Yan goes for the finish, but Figueiredo is able to survive and gets back to the feet.
Yan starts to land for fun with a minute left in the round, but Figgy is able to survive until the end of the round, but Yan’s boxing was looking crisp.
Another 10-9 Yan round. His style is suited towards a longer fight, and it shows that the longer this fight goes, the harder it is for Figgy to do anything.
Round 4: Closest round of the fight so far. It’s fairly tame from both guys until the last minute.
Yan starts to land well again with his boxing, but Figgy is able to catch Yan with a nice straight that drops Yan for a split second. This wakes both guys up, and for the last 15 seconds, both guys are trying to land big.
Figueiredo picked it up in this round, and I’d probably give him the round 10-9, but it’s clear that either way, he needs to finish late.
Round 5: Petr Yan’s boxing in this fight is on point. He finds such nice angles that he can land from and he does a ton of damage.
One thing I liked about Figueiredo in this fight was his big strikes to the body. They always landed well, and if he was more persistent with it, I think it might’ve done more damage.
Yan does a cool spinning back fist as well as a jumping switch kick in this round, which is wild for the fifth round, but he just doesn’t slow down.
Both guys just go for it for the last minute, but Yan was just a bit better, which tells the story of the fight.
Another 10-9 Yan. Great performance from him.
FINAL RESULT: Petr Yan by DEC (50-45,50-45,50-45)
OVERALL THOUGHTS: Petr Yan looked real good in this one. A vintage performance from him against great opposition. Figueiredo was game but after the first round was just one step behind. Next, I think Yan should rematch O’Malley because I think Umar v Merab is the title fight, so why not try to get his win back. Figgy v Sandhagen sounds fun so maybe that next for Figgy. Overall great card and a really fun main event.
