UFC Seattle: Henry Cejudo v Song Yadong Main Event Breakdown and Review
Eye wish the gloves were better
UFC Seattle was a fun little card with big finishes and great fights. The main event had a disappointing ending, but let’s watch it back, break it down, and talk about what we saw up until the end.
Round 1: Both guys struggle to find an opening. Song is using a few leg kicks which is smart to target the legs of Cejudo with his history of injuries.
Song lands a nice straight when Cejudo rushes in, which seems to be his advantage with speed and counters.
The first round is quite even as both guys are keeping a good pace, and Cejudo is staying active, but for me, Song has the power and speed advantage, which makes his shots feel more impactful.
Round 2: Song’s speed in this fight has been the difference so far, as there’s not much between them, but Song is landing quicker and stronger strikes and defending Cejudo’s attempts at takedowns and clinches.
Cejudo lands a solid strike that gets Song’s attention and starts to land a lot more once he swaps to a southpaw stance.
Both guys end the round, landing big strikes. I’d say so far in the fight, Song has been a slight step ahead of Cejudo, but once Cejudo went southpaw, he started landing more, and the round started to really heat up.
Round 3: Cejudo starts this round out of a southpaw stance, which continues to work well for him.
A clash of heads occurs as Cejudo tries some sort of jump, which just seems pretty silly.
A low blow happens next from Song which does land fairly clean on the cup.
Once the fight gets back to action the speed picks right up as both guys trade strikes.
There’s an eye poke next for this round to complete the hattrick of fouls in the fight as Song leads with his fingers out, and a doctor has to step in to determine if the fight continues.
Cejudo uses all five of his allowed minutes, but the fight starts back up with 1:15 left in the round.
Song picks up his pace as he senses that Cejudo isn’t all the way back due to the eye poke, but Cejudo makes it to the end of the round.
As Cejudo gets to his corner, he says he cannot see, and the decision is made to go the scorecards as it’s been three rounds, so we go to a technical decision.
FINAL RESULT: Yadong Song by Technical Decision
Overall Thoughts: It is a real shame about the ending of this one as it had a nice pace to it until the third round, where just everything started going wrong with eye pokes, low blows, and a clash of heads. Both guys were having a good fight in the first two, with Song being slightly faster and more powerful, but Cejudo was very much in the fight. I don’t know what’s next for either guy, as it’s quite an unfortunate result, but things happen in this sport.
